Who owns a luxury yacht?

A new private motor yacht cruising.

A new private motor yacht cruising.

In this section of the site we focus on which famous, wealthy and interesting people own which superyacht.  We are not talking about the charter of a yacht or merely visiting friends on a yacht for a vacation.  Here we are talking about a celebrity who has actually chosen to purchase or build a yacht of a particular style or type for the long term. Someone who has thought long and hard about their boat. Yachts and their owner’s will be added here over time.  Please come back to see it grow.

The type and style of yacht a person chooses to buy tells you a lot about their personal taste and style; their likes and dislikes.  The type of auto a person drives can tell you something about that person but a yacht can tell you a lot more.  A yacht is a large custom built home and no two yachts are alike.

Everyone would own a luxury yacht if they could.  I would anyway.  Luxury yachts are beautiful things indeed.  Being individually designed by the best designers in the world and then hand built by skilled craftsmen luxury yachts are like huge pieces of living sculpture that glide over the world’s oceans.  When a private yacht is large there is no other yacht the same.  There is no other crew the same and there is certainly no two owners alike.

The type and style of a yacht tells you a lot about that person.  What are their individual tastes?  Modern latest design or older classic? Do they like romantic classic motor boat like Jonny Depp’s yacht?  Do they like extra large yachts like?  Is it and ‘all ocean’ expedition yacht that can explore all parts of the world’s oceans, like Bono’s yacht from U2, or is it a coastal fast yacht design to sip around the fashionable coast lines of St Tropez, Monaco and Capri?  Do they like the sporty sailing yachts which use the wind’s natural forces for propulsion? It also tells you about a person by looking at the yacht they fell in love with.

The interior decoration of a yacht also gives an insight into someone’s likes and dislikes.  Because there are a huge number of yacht types to choose from it tells you about their particular tastes.  Modern interiors are chic, stylish and fashionable.  Classic interiors can be more relaxing – a place for friends and family to get away from it all and feel homely and comfortable: to float away in piece and privacy.

Tiger Woods owns a beautiful new American built motor yacht with relaxed and comfortable interior styling.

What about amenities, extras and water toys?  What can you do on the yacht?  Is there a deck Jacuzzi – somewhere to sip champagne and relax or throw a bikini party!  What type of water toys does the yacht have? Does the yacht have a Jet Ski and water ski speed boat?  What about windsurfers or even a submarine?  Is the celebrity the action and adventure type; is there a compressor for diving?

Bono's luxury motor yacht

Bono owns this motor yacht

The Italian media have reported that Bono has shelled out millions of euros on a luxury yacht. Management at U2 have declined to comment on the reports.

Bono, a 48 year old famous rock singer for superband U2, one of the world’s best-known humanitarians and leading charity activists, is understood to have bought the superyacht Cyan. The luxury motor yacht was built by the respected Codecasa firm of central Italy.

Until recently, luxury yacht Cyan had a weekly charter price of between €140,000 and €175,000. It had an estimated asking price of over €15m.

“We don’t comment on the private lives of band members,” a spokesperson for the band said in replies to queries about the yacht yesterday.

Bono, his wife Ali Hewson, and their children were on holiday on the yacht last year, and were photographed disembarking when it docked in Naples in August 2007.

The 140 foot motor yacht has six cabins and room for 12 guests to sleep comfortably. Among its features are a large deck space, a Jacuzzi dip pool, a large swimming platform and a garage for holding “watersport toys”.

The interior is constructed with mahogany and limed oak, with each of the rooms fitted with plasma screen tvs, satellite TV, and dvd players.

According to the reports in the Italian media, Bono has repainted the yacht in blue and has an expensive new stereo system fitted. The sale price, however, is not known, with some speculation that it might top €20m.

Even that would be unlikely to put too much pressure on the Dubliner’s bank account, however, as he has an estimated personal wealth approaching €200m.

U2 has sold more than 140 million albums worldwide and will release a new album early next year.

Codecasa, who were founded in 1825 and started out making wooden boats, built the yacht in 1997 for a group of European ship owners and it was extensively refitted in 1999.

The Italian yacht builder has sold yachts in the past to famous names such as fashion designers Giorgio Armani, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.

Giorgio Armani’s yacht, the Mariu, is 210-feet long and when not in use he rents it out with a price tag of €180,000 per week.

Bono, the U2 front man and human rights campaigner was invited to join Queen Rania of Jordan at a dinner organised by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni at her family villa in Cap Negre, in the French Riviera.

Bono rendezvoused with the elegant Jordanian royal who has been holidaying nearby in St Tropez at a point close by the Bruni’s property. The pair then boarded a helicopter which took them to their hosts.

On their first proper break since their February wedding, the President and his First Lady have been unwinding in the south of France since the start of this month. They’ve been dividing their time between Carla’s family estate and the official presidential summer residence of Fort of Bregancon, in the picture-perfect village of Bormes-les-Mimosas. No stranger to luxury yachts you can see them below doing a spot of yachting.

Famous film actor George Clooney, U2’s Bono and the gorgeous Cindy Crawford have been vacationing on the French Riviera.  Cindy can bee seen below looking stunning swimming of the aft deck of a luxury motor yacht. Mr. Clooney can be seen ‘chilling out’ reading a newspaper with sophistication on the yacht’s deck.  The A-list crew have been spending their days swimming, jet skiing and generally being fabulous aboard the luxury yacht.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford, her husband Rande Gerber, Jerry Weintraub and George Clooney sun themselves on the superyacht in St Tropez. Cindy Crawford, 42 years old, showed off her super-model style as she soaked up the sun in a bikini at St Tropez with actor friend George Clooney.

Cindy and her husband Rande Gerber are entertaining George, who recently split up with former cocktail waitress Sarah Larson, aboard their charter yacht off the south of France. Cindy Crawford shows off her sensational figure in a tiny bikini as she cools off in the sea. Cindy showed that she is still looking sensational at the grand old age of 42 as she took a dip in the Med near the famous shores of millionaire’s playground of St Tropez.

Later this month, George will be reunited with another one of his famous buddies, Brad Pitt, who will take a break from cuddling his baby twins to promote the Coen Brothers film Burn After Reading, at the Venice Film Festival.

Following on from their St Tropez jaunt, the group of friends made a stopover by yacht to the little French village of Eze and visited U2 singer Bono’s wonderful seaside house.

The rock star Irish lead singer for super group U2 has a place which is a popular haunt for celebrities in the area and as such Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie (Brangelina) and Robert De Niro recently took their families on vacation there.

Want to know where to go to find a luxury yacht for yourself, so you can join the A list?  Well, it seems you can either charter them, or buy them, but they are not cheap!
